How to Clean Makeup Stains From Carpet

If you are someone who loves their makeup, and if you are constantly on the go, you may find yourself in the irritating situation of noticing that your makeup has ended up on your carpet instead of your face. Plenty of people end up dropping some makeup on the carpet, and the sooner you clean it up, the less likely it is that the carpet will stain. Before attacking the stain, make sure that you know what is going to lift up the problem stain. Every stain should have its own cleaner.

If you have spilled liquid foundation on the carpet, the stain can be lifted through the use of a 3 percent hydrogen peroxide solution. Mascara can be lifted with ¼ teaspoon of mild dish washing detergent mixed in a glass of tepid water, while lipstick can be removed through using rubbing alcohol. Finally, nail polish can be removed using a non-acetone nail polish remover.

While all of these formulas are effective, you should always test them on a discreet corner of your carpeting before you try them on the stain itself, especially if the stain is in an obvious place. Take a moment and dab some of the removal liquid onto a cotton q-tip and wait to see if the liquid discolors your carpet. This is especially common if you are dealing with some kind of wool carpet or Oriental carpet. When you have verified that the cleaner won’t hurt your carpet, you can proceed towards removing the stain.

Start by blotting as much of the stain up as possible using a clean white cloth. Do not scrub the area, but remove all of the excess liquid. Soak a corner of a clean towel in the cleaning solution that is appropriate for the type of makeup in question and then dab at the edges of the stain, working your way towards the middle.

Allow the stain remover to sit on the area for about a minute or slightly more, and then pick it up again by blotting it with a clean cloth. Ideally, the stain will come up with the remover. Repeat this process as necessary. Mild stains can come up with just one or two applications, but serious ones will require more work.

After you are done lifting up the stain, fill a spray bottle with clean cool water and spray the affected area before blotting it dry. This removes any leftover smells from the cleaner and it also helps you re-fluff the carpeting in the area.

The problem with many makeup stains is that they are going to end up ground into the carpet. Even when they haven’t been, you may find that the stains are more stubborn than you would have thought. Remember that if you have any doubts about your ability to lift the stain in a carpet, you should contact a professional stain removal agency. A professional company can remove the stain without hurting your carpet.
